Are you curious about what doulas do, and what they can offer you? Have you thought about hiring a doula for your labor? To answer these questions, I interview Doula Liz Medina to understand a little more about doulas, and about the benefits of hiring a doula.
In this video, I interview my friend and doula Liz Medina about what a doula is, and what they can do for moms during pregnancy, labor and postpartum. We also talk about how to choose a doula, and what the difference is between a midwife and a doula.
What Are Doulas And What Do They Do?
A doula is someone who is trained to offer unbiased care for moms during labor. They are there to support their clients and keep their clients informed about what is happening during the labor. In Liz’s words, doulas are “Birth Google”! Not only that, doulas are also trained so that they have many techniques up their sleeve to help position baby in the womb, and help moms have the easiest and smoothest labor as possible. We go into a couple of techniques in the video. Doctors, midwives and doulas are very different in what they do, and they work in sync with each other in different settings, whether it be in a hospital, birth center, or home birth.
How Do You Choose A Doula To Work With?
GO WITH YOUR GUT! And when choosing a doula, make sure you get your questions answered- you should feel comfortable with the doula you choose, after all, they are going to see you have your newborn baby. There are also doulas that offer postpartum care services where they help to look after mom and baby, so if you are interested in having the same doula for labor and postpartum care, be sure to the prospective doula if they offer that service.
